Chapter 13

“Please tell me it wasn’t another cabin break in on deck ten.”

“No. This one occurred on the lido deck.”

“The lido deck…in broad daylight?”

Andy told Millie a woman left her beach bag and other personal belongings on a lounge chair while she grabbed a bite to eat in the buffet. When she returned a short time later, her belongings were gone.

“Poof? Disappeared?” Millie snapped her fingers. “Maybe it was a chair hog incident, another passenger or passengers got fed up and turned her stuff in to the ship’s staff.”

A common problem and complaint among cruise ship passengers was when fellow passengers would head up to the lido deck early in the morning, place beach towels and other belongings on the chairs to save them, then returning at their leisure, and successfully snagging a prime location near the pool or outdoor buffet areas for the entire day.

The ship’s official policy was if the items remained unclaimed for more than an hour, fellow passengers were allowed to remove the belongings from the saved lounge chairs and turn them in to the ship’s staff, so others could use the chairs.

Unfortunately, the policy caused conflict with the passengers and confrontations on the lido deck were regular occurrences.

It was a hot topic, and one Majestic struggled with since handling passengers’ personal belongings put them at risk for complaints of theft…a perfect example of what Andy was describing.

“Well, therein lies another problem. The items were turned in to the ship’s staff. The passenger was able to get her items back…minus some valuables.”

“What sort of valuables?” Millie asked.

“She claims she’s missing a small amount of cash, an iPad and an expensive pair of earrings.”

“The passenger should not have left valuable items unattended. They’re only inviting someone to steal the stuff.”

“I agree.” Andy sighed heavily. “Unfortunately, passengers don’t necessarily see it that way.”

Millie eyed her boss thoughtfully. “Perhaps they got the thief on camera. There are cameras on the lido deck.”

“Patterson’s staff is reviewing the surveillance camera’s footage. We both know how many people are on board this ship, how many passengers pass through the lido area and interact with the ship’s staff. It will be like looking for a needle in a haystack.”

“That’s terrible. I guess it’s time to remind guests not to leave items unattended anywhere on board the ship.”

A group of passengers boarded the ship, interrupting their conversation to ask what time the buffet stopped serving lunch.

Andy answered their question and waited for them to walk away. “There has been another theft just as disturbing.”

“You’re kidding.”

“I went over your reindeer hiding locations to check them myself, and one of them is missing.”

Millie snorted. “Someone stole one of the reindeer?”

“It was the little guy you stuck in the window of Sprinkles, the ice cream and candy shop, right next to the birthday cake display.”

“Maybe one of the junior passengers liked the reindeer so much, they decided to take him home,” Millie teased.

“It could be. The loss means we’re down to only forty-nine reindeer for our contest.
